Back pain Treatment Sunshine Coast.

Address the root cause of Back Pain, not just the symptoms.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek treatment, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood conditions out there.

In most cases, back pain is not a “back problem” on its own.

It is usually a compensation for how the body is moving, loading, and stabilising during everyday activities like walking, sitting, running, throwing, lifting, etc.

Rather than simply reducing symptoms temporarily, at Functional Patterns Sunshine Coast, we focus on identifying:

Why the body is overloading the spine in the first place?

Why back pain develops.

Back pain is typically the result of repeated mechanical stress over time.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Poor hip function (glutes not absorbing load effectively)

  • Excessive lower back dominance during movement

  • Limited core and trunk coordination under load

  • Restricted breathing mechanics affecting spinal stability

  • Asymmetrical walking patterns

  • Prolonged sitting and reduced movement variability

  • Previous injuries that altered movement strategy

When these patterns persist, the lower back often becomes the “default stabiliser,” or “flaccid” (i.e. unable to stabilise effectively).

Over time, this lead to irritation, tightness, or pain that is stubborn and persisting.

Why most treatments only provide short-term relief.

Most approaches focus on:

  • Stretching tight muscles

  • Strengthening the core in isolation

  • Manual therapy for symptom relief

  • Rest or temporary load reduction

While these can reduce discomfort, they often do not address the reason the spine is being overloaded in movement.

If movement mechanics don’t change, the body typically returns to the same compensations - and the pain returns.

Our approach: fixing the movement problem.

At Functional Patterns Sunshine Coast, we assess how your entire body functions during movement, particularly walking - the most repetitive cycle in human life.

We focus on restoring the functions that matter most to being a human being.

That is, STANDING, WALKING, RUNNING, and THROWING-based motions.

Some of the major factors we address are:

  • Restoring hip-driven locomotion

  • Reducing excessive spinal compensation

  • Improving ribcage and breathing mechanics

  • Rebuilding full-body coordination under load

  • Re-training how force is absorbed and transferred through the body

Instead of isolating the back, we treat the body as an integrated system.

What back pain may actually be telling you.

Back pain is often a signal that something isn’t working correctly. It’s like your car’s dashboard lights saying something like:

  • Your hips are not contributing effectively

  • Your torso is overworking to stabilise

  • Your gait pattern is inefficient

  • Your breathing mechanics are restricted

  • Your nervous system is managing chronic compensation, and so on.

In this model, pain is not the problem - it is feedback about how the system is functioning.

Who Functional Patterns is for.

The Functional Patterns approach is commonly sought by people experiencing:

  • Chronic or recurring lower back pain

  • Stiffness when sitting or standing

  • Pain during or after exercise

  • Disc-related diagnoses or imaging findings

  • “Nothing has worked long-term” frustration

  • Pain into hips or glutes

What results can look like.

Depending on the individual, outcomes may include:

  • Visible structural changes to standing posture

  • Visible improvement to walking and running efficiency

  • Reduced daily pain and stiffness

  • Improved tolerance to sitting and standing

  • Better walking comfort and efficiency

  • Increased hip and core coordination

  • Reduced reliance on symptom management strategies

  • Improved long-term movement confidence

Start addressing your back pain properly.

If you’ve tried stretching, strengthening, or treatment without lasting change, the issue is likely not your effort - but how your body is currently managing load and movement.

We identify the compensations driving your pain and rebuild a more efficient movement strategy from the ground up.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

  • In most cases, back pain is caused by movement dysfunction rather than a single injury. The body compensates for inefficiencies in hips, core, and gait mechanics, which in time can cause pain and injury - just like the needle that broke the camel’s back.

  • If inefficient movement caused it, then most of the time improvement comes from addressing the underlying movement patterns that drove the injury. Rest and medication may reduce acute symptoms but do not address the root cause of pain and injury.

  • Some people experience meaningful changes within weeks, but most longer-standing issues typically require more consistent retraining of movement patterns over time. What’s more important is that you are objectively retraining the efficiency of your movement.

  • Yes. Most disc-related cases are influenced by how load is distributed through the body. The disc then becomes the victim of a larger breakdown in the system. The focus then becomes on improving mechanics, not isolating the spine.

  • No. The system is scalable and adapted to each person’s current capacity. We are used to working with clients from across the board, with disabilities, through to elite athletes.

  • Yes, but not as directly in the way most people think. Back pain is usually less about “weak core muscles” and more about how the entire body coordinates load during movement. If the hips and trunk aren’t sharing load efficiently, the lower back often compensates regardless of strength.

  • Recurring back pain usually indicates that the underlying movement pattern hasn’t changed. Temporary relief from treatment or rest doesn’t address how your body is walking, sitting, and stabilising under load - which is typically where the issue originates.

  • In most cases, complete rest is not necessary. The key is choosing the right type of movement. Controlled, progressive loading that improves coordination is often more effective than avoiding movement altogether, provided symptoms are appropriately managed. Precision of movement is the most important variable to consider. This is what we do at Functional Patterns Sunshine Coast.
